Prince Harry has returned to California after spending only 28 hours and 42 minutes in the United Kingdom to witness the coronation of his father, King Charles, on Saturday.
Following the ceremony, he left Westminster Abbey with only the briefest of farewells, accompanied by a Metropolitan Police escort and four outriders, and proceeded directly to Heathrow Airport. Before his father and stepmother, the newly crowned queen had even completed taking their official portraits, he was back on the plane to California. Just before 6:30 p.m. local time, Harry’s British Airways flight from Heathrow to Los Angeles landed. The plan was for him to return in time for his son Archie’s fourth birthday celebration. Even though he was driven from the airport in a black Range Rover by a chauffeur, it is unlikely that he would have returned to his family before the children’s bedtime. The family resides in Montecito, California, which is approximately 100 miles from Los Angeles and a two-hour journey at the best of times due to the unpredictability of Los Angeles traffic. He had kept the British public, as well as his own family, on tenterhooks for months by playing cat and mouse with his attendance. Ultimately, it was a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment. At the main event, he was obscured from the cameras for the majority of the ceremony by Princess Anne’s feathered headdress. He was photographed smiling broadly as he arrived at Heathrow’s Windsor suite before his flight, still wearing his morning uniform and medals.
